A Brief History of Budweiser, the "King Of Beers"

The original Budweiser Beer or Budweiser Bürgerbräu, was founded in 1785 in Budweis, Bohemia, which at the time was part of the Holy Roman Empire. The company began exporting to the US in 1871.

In the U.S., Anheuser-Busch started using the Budweiser brand in 1876 and registered it two years later.

-A second company (now named Budvar, the Czech name for the city) was established in 1895 by mainly Czech brewers, also started exporting beer under the name Budweiser (being the German way of referring to something from the city such as a beer, while "Budejovický" would be the same name in Czech). By this time, the area that is the present-day Czech Republic was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. These exports into the US market led to the Budweiser trademark dispute. Negotiations between the three companies, the two from the original town and the American Anheuser-Busch, about using "Budweiser" reached an agreement in 1911 that allowed Anheuser-Busch to use the brand "Budweiser" only in North America.

-After World War I the Austro-Hungarian Empire was broken up, a number of new nations were created, including Czechoslovakia. A number of places were renamed with Czech and Slovak names, including the city of Budweis. After the fall of communism, both local breweries tried to secure rights to traditional names

-In 1876, Adolphus Busch perfected the recipe, the brewing process and the taste of The Great American Lager. For more than 133 years. Budweiser has withstood the test of time and is iconic in  American culture. The name Budweiser in America, is advertised as the King of Beers, has been a mainstay in American culture.

-Budweiser, the infamous beer of Anheuser-Busch and the best-selling beer in America, has been legaly fighting over the rights to the Budweiser name for decades. In 1876, athe E. Anheuser Brewing Association of St. Louis, Missouri, introduced Budweiser Lager Beer. Founded in 1860 by Eberhard Anheuser, the company was renamed the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association in 1879 after recognizing the contribution of then president Adolphus Busch.

-Budweiser was hugely popular and Americans consumed Budweiser three million barrels per year by 1941.

-The Controversy over the legal name right of Budweiser begins In Czechoslovakia. When Eberhard Anheuser named  Budweiser, he was paying homage to the beer makers of a Czech town called Ceske Budejovice, known in Anheuser's native Germany as "Budweis."  To the residents of  Budweis, their local beer has been known as Budweiser for several hundred years.

-Budweiser Budvar Brewery (Budejovický Budvar) is a brewery in the Czech Republic that is best known for brewing the beer known as Budweiser Budvar in the European Union, Czechvar in the United States and Canada, and either Budweiser Budvar or Budejovický Budvar in the rest of the world.

-In 1895 the Czech brewery Budejovicky Pivovar known as Budvar began producing and marketing their own brew under the name Budweiser Budvar, and then the legal battles soon began.

-In 1939, Anheuser-Busch and Budvar settled the trademark suit in the United States, giving AnheuserBusch the American rights to the name Budweiser in exchange for Budvar's ownership of the name Budweiser in most of Europe.  As Anheuser-Busch popularity expanded and began to dominate international markets, more problems were on the horizon. The Czechs took offense to Budweiser's slogan "The King of Beers," stating that Budweis brewers had called their product "The Beer of Kings" since the sixteenth century. And Budvar supporters pointed out that  Adolphus Busch Budweiser wasn't legally considered beer in Germany, because the Reinheitsgebot -Beer Purity Regulations dating back to 1516 strictly forbid the use of rice in brewing beer.

-In recent years  Budvar has again won the right to use the names Budweiser and Bud in the European Union, but court cases continue to linger on  from Sweden to Hong Kong. Budvar's current strategy is to sell its beer in the United States as Czechvar, hoping that word of mouth about what they claim is the real Budweiser will win them popularity with American consumers that they have yet to gain, at least for now, its in the hands of the  the U.S. courts.

-In the European Union, Budejovický Budvar is recognized as a product with Protected Geographical Indication. However, the trademark rights to the name Budweiser for some products other than beer are owned by Anheuser-Busch.

-In early 2007, Anheuser-Busch and Budvar reached an agreement that stated that Anheuser-Busch would market Budvar/Czechvar in the United States and several other countries for an undisclosed fee. However, both sides stated that this did not affect their lawsuits. Czechvar is listed in Anheuser-Busch's product lineup with brief product info sheet.

-On 6 April 2007, Czech Agriculture Minister Petr Gandalovic, whose ministry is in charge of the state-owned company, announced that the Budvar brewery would be privatized. Gandalovic repeated the possible privatization process would depend on the outcome of the trademark dispute with Anheuser-Busch.
